About Whinnyfold Knitwear

Whinnyfold Knitwear

Beautiful, colourful knitwear and accessories, individually created in Shetland and lambswool on my vintage hand-frame machine

I've always been a knitter, encouraged by my mum and granny when I was about 5 years old. I knitted clothes for my Sindy doll, scarves and jumpers and always loved playing with colours. When my kids were wee, a friend gave me a her old, basic knitting machine when she upgraded and I used to create kids' stripey jumpers and hats, which I sold at craft fairs . Then I invested in a new Brother punch-card machine in order to do more intricate pattern - and that's the machine I still use today.

I love colour and I love the wide range of traditional patterns that permeate the craft of knitting, especially Fair Isle and Scandinavian and I frequently blend those ideas. I also invent my own patterns, taking inspiration from the countryside around me. But, most importantly, I create practical, cosy knitwear - mostly in lambswool from a local mill - which will keep you snug all through the year.

Everything is individually knitted by me on my (now) vintage machine and finished off by hand. Most items are knitted to order, so I can incorporate changes to suit you: need slightly longer or shorter sleeves? Like a cardi in a jumper design? You have a favourite colour? I'm open to discussions in order to make your favourite jumper become reality!
