About The Mossy Nook

The Mossy Nook

The Mossy Nook is a charming world of handmade treasures, using the crafts of needle felting, clay modeling and crochet.

My creativity has to have a purpose for it to be fully enjoyable to me. The Mossy Nook is my way of giving a purpose to everything i make, and that purpose is to give some form of happiness to people, through my makes. If it is a crocheted scarf you bought, then it makes me happy to know it will be keeping someone warm and snuggly. If it is a needle felted toadstool, then I am happy to know it may well bring a smile to someone’s face, perhaps when they most need it.

The Mossy Nook isn’t just about me making things and selling them. It is about a connection between me and you. I am making things for you to enjoy, to treasure, to gift to a loved one. That’s the purpose and reward for what I do.

When needle felting, I use beautiful, natural wool fibres.
Needle felting is the process of using specially designed barbed needles to manipulate wool fibres into 3d objects, such as soft sculpture figurines, or into a solid fabric. Needle felting is quite a long process and patience is needed but it is so absorbing, very rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable!

When crocheting I love having beautiful yarns flowing through my fingers- no scratchy yarns allowed! I have quite an addiction to yarn and a sizable collection, but I have a perfect excuse for buying so much yarn! It is so I can make snuggly scarves and pretty gloves for my wonderful customers! Crocheting is highly addictive and I find the repetitive hand movements have a calming, therapeutic affect.

For my clay pieces I use Das, air drying modelling clay. After several days of drying, I then paint them using acrylic and gouache paints. This process takes several days as it is important to make sure each phase has plenty of time to dry thoroughly.
I often use wire armature within the piece, to give strength to weaker parts, such as stems (stipes) of mushrooms.
