Originating in Germany in the mid-1800s, spun cotton ornaments are among the earliest known Christmas tree decorations. This resourceful craft transformed scraps of cotton batting into charming figures—often fruits or vegetables—built over a delicate wire frame. After shaping the cotton by hand or by ‘spinning’ it around the wire, makers brushed the form with a simple flour and water paste to set it. Once dry, the ornaments were carefully painted to bring each decoration to life.
Over the centuries, very little has changed with the technique of making spun cotton ornaments and they remain a popular craft and are very collectible. But spun cotton ornaments aren’t just Christmas themed anymore – think Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, birthdays, and lots more. Whimsical objects made to delight you throughout the year!
I am a self-taught maker who has loved handcrafting things since childhood. I have dabbled with many crafts over the years, but spun cotton ornaments have become my firm favourite. I think it is the simplicity of it – no fancy equipment is required, just a few basic materials and my own creativity. Oh, and a bit of sparkle.
My ornaments are made from wire, cotton, thread, cornflour glue and are finished with paint and a bit of sparkle (mica flakes, German glass glitter, or eco-glitter). They are for indoor decoration only (keep them away from moisture) and not suitable as children’s toys.
Each of my spun cotton ornaments are handmade by me and unique, never two exactly the same. I love creating each one and want to make charming little keepsakes you will want to collect and enjoy for years to come. If there is something special you would like not available in my shop, send me a message as I would be happy to take your commission.
