Ana Simoes discovered her passion for jewelry as a child, inspired by her grandfather, a talented goldsmith. Although he passed away when she was young, his influence remained. Ana initially studied architecture at university but soon realised she missed the creativity of jewellery making. This led her to train as a jeweller and gem setter in Porto and later earn a first-class BA (Hons) in Jewellery from The Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture, and Design at London Metropolitan University.
After graduating, Ana started a business partnership in London, showcasing her work at numerous international jewellery fairs, including International Jewellery London, and freelancing for renowned jewellery brands.
In late 2016, Ana moved to Plymouth to become the Workshop Coordinator for Jewellery and Small Scale Metals at Arts University Plymouth. She taught undergraduate and postgraduate students until 2021, just before becoming a mother.
In 2018, Ana launched her ominous brand, Ana Simoes Jewellery. Her signature work is inspired by her heritage, using gold, gemstones, and natural stones. She blends traditional techniques with modern designs to create unique, elegant pieces. Portuguese architecture, with its beautiful patterns and shapes, is a major influence on her designs.
After becoming a mother, Ana's jewellery-making journey took on a more organic and intuitive approach. She now spends a great deal of time outdoors, drawing inspiration from the moors, the coast and motherhood. Ana enjoys foraging with her family, often discovering treasures that she transforms into exquisite pieces using precious metals and beautiful gemstones.
Her brand, Meemu—pronounced "mee-moo" and derived from the Portuguese word "mimo," meaning cuddle or treat—embodies this personal and creative evolution. Each piece is handcrafted at Ana's studio in Plymouth, capturing the essence of her artistic journey.
