Dorset Buttons Starter Kit
Dorset Buttons£10.00
When I was eighteen, I completed a Pre-Diploma at Salisbury Art College.
Unfortunately, I was not offered a place at the art school of my choice, so as an
upset teenager, I decided to make an about-turn and moved to a career in
marketing. Following several very enjoyable years working in the leisure
industry and later moving to museums, I decided to revisit my creative art
skills, taking inspiration from the heritage craft of Dorset Buttons.
I have always loved working with textiles, and I complement the original
methods to work my Dorset Buttons with the use of contemporary materials.
Trying out new designs and different ways of using the skills of this heritage
craft. Most of my work is based on a ring, and I use anything from a 5mm ring
for fine delicate work, to 90cm hoops for wall art.
The materials I use include vintage or ethically sourced yarns and textiles. I also
use ribbons, lace and beads. In fact, I use anything I feel will compliment my
work. I particularly enjoy the challenge of combining texture with colour to my
work.
Much of my work is often commissioned and includes a range of Dorset
Buttons for films, living history costumes and bespoke fashion design work. As
well as large wall art pieces.
I am currently involved in presenting, teaching, and demonstrating the art of
Dorset Buttony to organisations and individuals and have an international
client following. I also offer on-line workshops across the world from my studio
in Donhead St Mary.
