I'm Carol and I make quirky, happy jewellery out of tiny glass seed beads.
I live in the North East of Scotland, in Royal Deeside, right on the edge of the Scottish Highlands and the Cairngorm National Park. I spend a lot of my time outdoors and with animals and this love of nature, wildlife and cute creatures is strongly reflected in my work.
I began learning to bead weave and bead embroider in 2012 and I haven't stopped learning since. I was instantly hooked after a workshop in my local craftshop and I quickly exhausted their knowledge and began to teach myself through books and digital tutorials.
I absorbed every bit of knowledge that I could find about the very best bead quality, thread choice, stitches and bead finishes. Over time I was lucky enough to attend workshops with the beadweaving stars and I have learnt a considerable amount through their patient tuition. It's one of those fabulous art forms where you will never know everything. There is always something new to explore and there are still regular moments of beading epiphany.
Each piece of jewellery is made either by sewing tiny glass seed beads together with a needle and specialised thread or by sewing the beads onto a purpose made bead backing. It's a slow, meditative process which I find deeply relaxing and fulfilling.
Over time I have developed a very distinctive style. My bead woven earrings, bracelets and pendants are intricate and have a slightly vintage look about them. My bead embroidered brooches are cute and quirky with a lot of fun sewn into them.
When my children were little I beaded in the kitchen while they did their homework, played or watched tv. As they grew up and moved away, I moved into my own "bead studio" in the garden (aka my garage) which was converted to be a bit more suitable for my needs. Nowadays it's where you are most likely to find me, alongside my loyal bead buddy, Odso, my Jack Russel Terrier.
My aim is to create beautiful, wearable, affordable handmade jewellery which can be given as a gift, as a way to share your affection for a friend, or simply to raise a smile.
