Thank you for visiting my little shop, Broken Colour Mosaics.
I'm Andrea Britnell and I love colour. Actually that sounds flippant - I think I feel colour. To me, colour and pattern are a bit like music. When the melody is right it makes you feel... ahhh. It fascinates me the way you can put colours together to give a totally different composition. Each arrangement makes me feel a different way and so many schemes and styles draw me in. I find myself standing, staring at inanimate objects or the natural world, fascinated with the play of light or depth of shadow, wishing I could replicate what I see. Over the years I have enjoyed making art in many forms but mosaic has me hooked. It's an amazingly versatile media and I love the way I can paint with the tiles. Many styles appeal to me but I'm trying my hardest not to be distracted, and to focus on the style I have developed with my mosaics. I use Winckelmans tiles, which are matt and come in a beautiful subtle palette. I am also starting to bring in Emaux de Briare tiles which have a slight lustre and brighter hues. I have created interior wall plaques in a variety of sizes and coaster-sized tabletop art.
I live in beautiful Sussex and am inspired by the nature around me. I enjoy dog walks through the woods and love gardening. I have recently created a small wildlife pond and am nurturing a mini meadow.
I studied art and pottery at school. I attended the The College for Distributive Trades in Charing Cross which covered a broad range of design subjects and media from display and interior design to life drawing and prop making. I then went on to be a Display Designer in a number retail stores.
After my children arrived I became a Teaching Assistant which is the perfect job for creative people. There was always something to get your artistic teeth into!
Since leaving the school there has been a big gap in my life which the mosaic pieces have filled. I’m really excited about my new venture and delighted to be here on Folksy, surrounded by so many talented people with a shared love of art and craft.
