About Karen Hughes Art

Karen Hughes Art

Highly detailed stipple fine art prints, inspired by ancient Scotland, Celtic mythology and nature.

Hello, and welcome to Karen Hughes Art.

I've had an interest in art and ancient cultures ever since I can remember. I loved family trips to Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. I considered it a magical place where I could enter another world of cultures, creatures and history, both real and mythological. The copy of The Children's Book of the Earth I received when I was seven was also hugely influential. It piqued my curiosity, from the origins of the solar system, to dinosaurs and the cave paintings of Lascaux. These interests eventually lead me to Glasgow School of Art and a BA (Hons) Degree in Constructed Textile Design, and membership of The Pictish Arts Society.
I still love to experiment, and over the years have enjoyed taking classes in stained glass making, silversmithing and jewellery design. As well as teaching myself pyrography, a particular favourite that I'd like to explore further.

I greatly admire the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret MacDonald and the "Glasgow Girls". The whiplash curves of Art Nouveau, the stylised geometry of Art Deco jewellery designs and German Expressionist cinema. In particular The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, with its angular Constructivist-style set designs and dramatic painterly shadows.

I'm a huge music fan, and the music I grew up with was rich in imagery and glam drama. From Kate Bush to Adam Ant, and the Goth and New Romantic styles, all combine with my love of mythology, legend and nature, to strive to create art which is both highly detailed and impactful.
